5. Performance Tests: Unless otherwise specified, the tests shall be conducted in an atmosphere of 21o + 3oC (64.5o-75.2oF) and a relative humidity of 50% + 5%. Tests involving writing, shall be conducted with the markers held at an angle approximately 55o + 5o from the horizontal and with a writing pressure so that the markings are clearly visible. The write-out speed shall be set at 35 + 5 feet per minute, and the spring generated point shall be stopped, the marker capped, and allowed to recover nib down for 15 minutes. The initial point load shall be increased by 10 grams after each cycle. The write-out test shall continue until the marker has reached the minimum write-out distance. The test paper shall be in accordance with A-A-2804A, type III white bond paper having a pH of 5.0 with a basis weight of 60 grams per square meter (16 pound, 17 x 22-500). A tolerance of 5% is allowable. Paper for the Machine Writing Test shall have an additional requirement of 160-140 seconds maximum smoothness on both sides using the Sheffield method per the most current TAPPI T538 test method. Alternately, paper conforming to JCP-O-60 can be use as an alternate source.
5.1 Drying time. Place a sheet of paper on a smooth, flat surface and partially cover with a second sheet of paper. Place a 200 gram weight, approximately 31.75 mm (1.25 inches) in diameter, on top of the sheet. Write a five-letter word on the exposed portion of the bottom sheet, allow to dry three seconds, and immediately draw the top sheet and weight across the writing at a rate of approximately 101.6 mm (4.0 inches) per second. The writing shall not smear or smudge.
5.2 Startability. Write a five-letter word with an unused sample marker. Then place marker on its side with cap off for three hours. Immediately draw the marker nib across a sheet of paper at a rate of 101.6 mm (4.0 inches) per second, increments of 203.32 mm (8 inches) until a solid continuous mark of at lease .38 mm (0.015 inches) width is attained. Then place marker horizontally with cap off for an additional 15 hours and recap for 30 minutes. Remove the cap and draw the marker nib across the paper as described above and examine.
5.3 Machine Write Test. The machine tests shall be conducted on Anja model W-10B, Harley model W10-F, K&L, or Minitek marker test machines or equivalent with the following
Writing Load |
0.490 N (50gF) |
Writing Angle |
55 degrees (continuously varying) |
Writing Speed |
3352.8 mm (11 feet) per minute |
Writing Pattern |
circle |
Select the marker tested and mount in writing position in the machine. Set the machine speed at 3352.8 mm per minute and the writing pressure at 50 grams. Operate the apparatus, stopping for a 15 minute recuperation period after each sucessiev 91440.3 mm of writing. Continue until the distance requirement is met or the marker fails to produce a solid continuous linee 0.38 mm (0.015 inches) to 1.27 mm (0.050 inches) wide.
