PENCIL, MECHANICAL FOR 1.1MM SIZE LEAD /COLORED

(Push / Twist Action)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description by all federal agencies in lieu of Federal Specification SS-P-186E Type I (a) and replaces CID A-A-2783 and CID A-A-2765 which is canceled.

1. Scope. This commercial item description covers mechanical pencils which accommodate graphite and clay leads.

2. Classification:

Types: 1 – Type I – Push Action

2 – Type II – Twist Action

3. Salient Characteristics:

3.1 Mechanical pencils shall consist of a barrel which contains a lead holding mechanism suitable to propel, repel, and or expel leads (as applicable), a metal point, a metal pocket clip, and a replaceable eraser.

3.2 Mechanical pencils shall operate by a lead holding device which shall operate as indicated in paragraph 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 to propel, expel the lead in short, uniform increments to a usable length from the sleeve end, and shall operate smoothly and easily, without binding, bending, breaking or malfunctioning.

3.2.1 Type I mechanical pencils shall have the clutch mechanism activated by pressing the push button located at the top (eraser end) of the pencil to propel and expel lead from the point.

3.2.2 Type II mechanical pencil shall have operate by twist action which is activated by turning the top portion of the pencil (eraser end) to propel, repel. and expel lead from the point.

3.3 The pencils shall be of the following color: Black (graphite HB hardness), Blue(clay), Red (clay), and as specified in section 7.2.
