COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
OPENER, LETTER, HAND
(METAL)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description by all Federal Agencies.
1. Scope: This commercial item description covers metal, hand held letter openers for general office use.
2. Salient Characteristics:
2.1 The opener shall be fabricated from case hardened, through hardened, or stainless steel; or any commercially appropriate, corrosion resistant metal either a straight or offset blade, similar to Figure 1 and 2 in section 6, 3.
2.2 All corners, including the handle end shall be smoothly rounded and shall have an overall length of 228.6 mm + 12.7 mm (9+1/2 inches) long: 152.4 mm +6.35 mm (6+1/4 inches) for the blade and 76.20 mm+6.35 mm (3+ 1/4 inches) for the handle.
2.3 The blade shall be uniform width or slightly tapered from 9.53 mm (3/8 in.) maximum to 4.76 mm (3/16 in.) minimum starting from the blade handle to a point 25.4 mm (1 in) from the tip.
2.4 The blade shall be tapered from a point 25.4 mm + 6.35 mm (1+ 1/4 inches) from the blade tip, and have a straight blade not less than 1.59 mm (1/16 inch) thick. The blade shall be beveled on both edges, but not sharpened, to permit envelopes to be slit without tearing.
