COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LEAD HOLDER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description, for the use of all Federal agencies.
This description covers lead holders for drawing and drafting use.
Type I- with adjustable indicator for 17 lead hardness degrees.
Type II- with color coding (cap, ring, or other method) for lead identification
Type III- without lead hardness indicator
I. Salient Characteristics:
A. Lead holders shall consist of a barrel which contains a lead holding (clutch) mechanism and chamber and pocket clip. A finger grip shall be located at the writing end of the barrel.
B. Lead holder shall operate by push button action to propel the lead in short, uniform increments to a usable length from the point, and shall operate smoothly and easily, without binding, bending, breaking or other malfunction.
C. Lead holding mechanism (clutch) shall grip the lead firmly, without breaking, so that lead does not turn or slip into or out of the holder. The pencil shall be capable of dispensing the specified lead.
D. Lead shall not fall free from the lead holder when the push button is depressed such that the lead when reduced to length of as small as 0.5 inches will continue to be retained in the lead holder.
