DATING STAMP
(FIXED LEGEND)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in lieu of Federal Specification ZZ-R-800
Salient characteristics:
General. Each stamp shall consist of four endless rubberized fabric bands mounted on a suitable frame, and a fixed die with the legend mounted on a cushion of resilient material. The die and cushion shall be mounted on a base plate attached to the dater. The die, cushion, and mount shall have a slot to allow the dater to penetrate and produce the date impression simultaneously with the fixed legend. The procurement documents shall specify all of the following:
a) The design and contents of the legend.
b) The means, if any, or identifying the legend.
c) The base plate: screw or hinge type.
Metal components shall have a protective finish to prevent corrosion. The front of the stamp shall be readily identifiable.
Band legends. The four bands shall rotate readily and independently on cogged drums by means of a serrated thumbwheel but shall not slip out of place when the stamp is in use. Characters shall be raised in relief a minimum of 1/32 inch from a 1/16 inch minimum thickness base and vulcanized onto the bands. The printed height of the characteristics shall be one of the following, to be specified in the procurement documents:

The two “day” bands shall have numerals to indicate “01” through “31”. The “month” band shall abbreviate each month by its first three letters being capitalized. The “year” band shall have a minimum of 5 consecutive four numeral year-dates, beginning with the year of the contract order. It shall have also the legends “A.M”, “PM”, “ANS’D”, “ENT’D” and “REC’D”. The apostrophes are optional. The class C year band shall have a minimum of 6 two numeral year dates. Each band shall have at least one blank space.
The order of the bands shall be one of the following, to be specified in the procurement documents:

Performance. Each stamp shall produce clear, sharp, single impressions of equal intensity, with no closing of characters. The synthetic and/or natural rubbers used in this stamp shall be of sufficient hardness and durability to ensure usability over the entire 5-year lifetime of the stamp.
Workmanship. The frame and handle shall have smooth finish to prevent injury to the user.
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Recovered materials. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
Packaging, packing, and marking. The stamps shall be packaged in accordance with normal commercial practice and packed to assure acceptance by common carrier and provide product protection against loss and damage during multiple shipments, handling, and storage. The shipping container shall be in compliance with National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Marking shall be in accordance with the contract or order.
