COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BASKET, WASTEPAPER, METAL, OFFICE AND LOBBY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial
Item Description in lieu of Federal Specification RR-B-181.
The metal wastepaper basket covered by this document are intended for use as temporary receptacles for paper waste and small articles of thrash. They shall be used in offices or lobbies as applicable.
Salient Characteristics:
1. The baskets shall be made of good commercial steel not less than 0.0159 inch thick.
2. Top diameters shall be reinforced by a side bead formed tightly around a steel wire which encircles the outside of the vertical wall and is not less than 0.207 inch in diameter.
3. The basket shall rest squarely on a flat surface.
4. The bottom of the waste compartment shall be recessed 0.925 + .050 inch from the bottom edge of the basket.
5. The basket shall be marked with the name or trademark of the manufacturer.
6. Basket color shall be as specified in the procurement documents.
7. When specified in the procurement documents, lobby baskets shall have hand grips located near the top, 180 degrees apart.
Enamel coating.
1. All basket surfaces shall be cleaned and coated with finishing enamel in accordance with good commercial practice.
2. The film thickness shall be not less than 0.7 mil .
3. When tested as specified in Method A of ASTM D 3359, the coating shall not peel or be removed from the substrate.
Fire hazard. The basket shall minimize any fire hazard resulting from combustion of its contents. If a fire starts in a basket containing not less than 12 ounces per cubic foot of writing paper, carbon paper, newspaper, and empty wax plastic coated milk containers, the basket shall contain the fire without spilling the burning contents onto the floor. When the fire has burned itself out, the only damage to the basket shall be charred or cracked coating.
Workmanship. Baskets shall be free of burrs, sharp edges, runs, wrinkles, blisters, flakes, gritty finish, areas of not film or thin film, faulty construction, and any other defects which affect appearance or serviceability.
