COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STENCIL SET, MARKING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Federal Specification RR-S-714.
Salient characteristics:
Each stencil set shall include the complete 26 letter alphabet, numbers “0” to “9” inclusive, one ampersand (“&”), one beginner, one period ender, one plain ender, two spacers, one period, one comma and one apostrophe.
The stencil sets shall be provided in the following heights: 1/2, 1,1-1/2, 2, 3, 4, and 5 inches.
The letter and figure shall be Gothic Style.
All characters shall be symmetrical about their vertical center line.
The characters shall interlock or join one another, without force, such as the use of tools to cut or reshape the member(S). Each character shall be able to join any other character (of the same size) to form a single strip.
The thickness of the brass and the brass margin above and below the letters and figures, shall be as specified in table I.

1/ Tolerance shall be plus or minus .0010 inch.
Workmanship. The stencil characters shall have a natural finish, shall be smooth, and free from spots, burrs and sharp edges.
Certification. The contractor shall certify the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Recovered Materials. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
Packaging, packing, and marking. The stencil sets shall be packaged in accordance with normal commercial practice and packed in fiberboard boxes that will assure acceptance by common carrier and provide protection against loss and damage during multiple shipments, handling, and storage. The shipping container shall be in compliance with National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Shipping containers shall be marked as specified in the contract or order.
